The type of procedure, the patient's medical complexity, stability, comfort, and above all- safety, will determine that appropriate level of anesthesia.

General Anesthesia
Patients under minimal sedation remain awake and responsive. They can respond purposefully to verbal commands and all protective reflexes remain intact. The primary goal of minimal sedation is to increase comfort for those who have mild anxiety.
Patients under moderate sedation (sometimes referred to as 'conscious sedation') are relaxed and drowsy, but still respond purposefully to verbal commands. Independent breathing remains intact, however careful monitoring is necessary to ensure patient safety.

Unarousable even with painful stimulus
Patients under deep sedation are in a state of depressed consciousness and cannot be easily aroused by verbal or tactful stimulation. Close airway monitoring is required. Vigilant attention to vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) and capnography are necessary to ensure patient safety.
Patients receiving general anesthesia experience a complete loss of consciousness, during which they are not arousable to any stimulation and do not feel pain during the procedure. A highly qualified medical professional monitors general anesthesia to ensure patient safety.
Depth of anesthesia is independent of the route of administration.
Enteral (oral or sublingual), parenteral (intravenous, intramuscular, intranasal, or submucosal), or inhalation delivery of a medication does not directly indicate the depth of anesthesia a patient will experience.
